| This is part rant, part discussion. So I started playing Kingdom Hearts 258-2 Days on the DS for no reason (I didn't play I or II). I looked at the game time and I started Mission I at 1:50 (h:mm). There was an intro that lasted about 5 minutes maybe. There we no real cutscenes after the intro thus far. Meaning I spent about 1:30 (given transition time and the mini 15-second "cutscenes" between tutorials) on the mandatory tutorials they had for me. Whatever happened to games that made you figure things out? Yes KH258-2D, I needed you to tell me that B is for jump and A is for attack. I needed you to tell me what an Ether did. Whatever happened to games like Super Mario Bros with no tutorials whatsoever? Or games like Super Smash Bros (N64) that had a tutorial if you decided to go idle at the title screen? Or games like Yoshi's Story that had an optional "Practice Mode" as a tutorial? Or games like FFVIII that had tutorials in that interrupted the storyline but allowed you to skip them? We ignored those booklet manuals that came with games for a reason. As games progress, developers appear to think the video game audience is quickly losing its ability to interpret their game mechanics. I'd imagine it would take less resources to omit these tutorials. Which then brought a friend to show me this webpage. I hate long, tedious, unnecessarily un-skip-able tutorials. End rant. Begin discussion. | |

| I agree, if I wanted a tutorial, I'd read the INSTRUCTION book. Which seems obviously the way to go if you can't figure things out on your own. | |

| I know for Pokemon games, there's always tutorials. I'm sick of the tutorials cause the tutorials always similar with each Pokemon game. Though tutorial is good for beginner player, at least when I first play Maple, I pick up arrows that dropped from snails rofl.. (Tutorial for Pokemon game reminds me of Evan tutorial f3).. | |

| I was mostly okay with the Pokemon tutorials, they weren't horrible... although I don't know what heart gold/soul silver tutorial is like... the only portable pokemon game(s) I have yet to play... Chris got heart gold, but we only have one DS. ;o | |

| I played SoulSilver (J) with a "translation" patch in January (1/3 of it was actually translated, the rest was in Japanese - lucky for me I remember most of the storyline from Gold) and tutorial was identical to the one in Gold/Silver/Crystal iirc. L> Way to skip that too, although I suppose it doesn't bother me as much as some other tutorials.
It still bugs me. Even Maplestory only has that one map [that you can ignore] telling you Alt to Jump and directional keys to move and Maplestory is played on a standard 102-key keyboard. There are eight buttons on the DS. I think I would have figured out that B was jump and A was to attack; they didn't have to give me a tutorial =/ . I guess kids today don't want to think...at all. I feel old. | |

| Does Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver any better than the original Gold/Silver? I used to play one, either Gold/Silver, then decide to quit it since it was so boring. And I think you can't rebattle the npc unless they call you or you call their phone number or something like that. Plus they are not always want to rebattle. Makes it really frustrating to level up a Pokemon. I still prefer Pokemon D/P or Platinum cause those games have all 4th gen and some other Pokemons from the previous generations. | |
